You test what must never be allowed to fail.

Commissioning Engineer

This is what you put into operation

What has been designed and built now needs to be able to perform as it should. At Zwart, you’ll work on emergency power systems and energy systems for environments where nothing can be allowed to come to a halt. It’s up to you to test, assess and fine-tune a fully assembled installation until it becomes a system that people can rely on.

Depending on your role, you may focus on generators and control systems, UPS systems or BESS battery energy storage systems. You check the individual components as well as how well they perform together. What happens if the mains supply fails? Does the system switch over properly? You check everything before the crucial moment arises.

From initial test to operational installation

As a Commissioning Engineer or Commissioning Technician, you bring design, construction and control systems together. You carry out tests, optimise settings, and verify that the system meets specifications and safety standards.

You work closely together with engineers, technicians and project managers. If you come across a deviation, you take the time to assess it and set out a logical way to deal with it. You discuss your findings, establish the cause, and test the agreed solution.

You document the results and show the client how the system operates. You work on projects at data centres, hospitals and industrial facilities in the Netherlands and abroad. Your home base and the amount of travel required will depend on your specific role.

How you make it work.

Depending on your role, you may be responsible for:

  • Testing and commissioning emergency power installations, UPS systems or BESS battery energy storage systems;
  • Preparing, executing and documenting Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs);
  • Configuring and checking control systems, protection systems and the interaction between different components;
  • Testing the transfer from utility power to emergency power and, where applicable, the synchronisation between generators;
  • Analysing and resolving deviations identified during testing and commissioning;
  • Coordinating technical matters with engineers, project managers, technicians and the client;
  • Explaining system operation and control during handover;
  • Working at client sites in the Netherlands and other countries, mainly within Europe.

Because failure is not an option.

A test demonstrates what a drawing alone cannot prove. Does the switching process work as it should? Do all the components respond to one another correctly? Does the system continue to perform under the conditions that it was constructed for?

You look beyond the little green ‘pass’ mark. You analyse, verify and keep asking questions. Together with your colleagues, you resolve any deviations before the system is put into service.

After all, behind this system is a data centre that must keep running. An operation that must proceed. A production line that cannot be allowed to come to a halt. When everything works perfectly, nobody notices how many checks were carried out beforehand.

But you do. Because...

You know what’s at risk.
