Overcoming grid constraints with an integrated energy system
Grid congestion meant that the site's contracted utility connection could no longer support daily operations. This distribution centre in the Netherlands required an energy solution that would solve today's capacity challenges whilst providing a solid foundation for future growth.
The challenge
The customer needed more power than the electricity grid could provide. The contracted grid connection had become a limiting factor, and a network upgrade was not available within the required timeframe.
Without sufficient capacity, operational continuity and future expansion would be at risk.
The solution
We started with the assets already in place: a constrained grid connection and a substantial rooftop solar installation.
Next, we analysed the site's complete energy profile, including baseload demand, peak loads, solar generation and operational processes. This allowed us to determine exactly how much power and capacity would be required to guarantee energy security both now and in the future.
The result is an integrated energy system in which all assets work together intelligently:
- 2 MWp solar PV installation
- 500 kW / 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)
- 1,500 kVA Stage V generator with AdBlue exhaust after-treatment for periods of high peak demand
- A central Energy Management System (EMS) and Power Management System (PMS) that monitor, control and optimise all energy assets
The system operates independently of grid limitations, giving the customer complete control over its energy infrastructure and capacity requirements.
