BE Fresh | Energy Storage that keeps running if the grid goes down
For BE Fresh, Zwart developed a battery energy storage system that combines two key functions: optimising energy market participation and safeguarding business continuity. The system stores energy when prices are low and strategically deploys it when demand and market prices increase. At the same time, the installation serves as a backup power solution. In the event of a grid outage, the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) automatically takes over the energy supply. This enables business operations to continue uninterrupted whilst reducing dependence on external factors. The result is greater flexibility, lower energy costs and additional operational security when it matters most.

The challenge
Energy must be available when it is needed
BE Fresh operates in the food industry, where a reliable energy supply is essential for day-to-day operations.
At the same time, energy prices fluctuate throughout the day, whilst the timing of on-site solar generation does not always align with energy demand.
The challenge was clear: create greater flexibility in energy usage without compromising business continuity.

Zwart's solution
A BESS with two functions
Zwart delivered a 1.2 MW / 2.1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System integrated with the site's existing electrical infrastructure and 489 kWp of solar PV.
The BESS charges when energy is readily available or market prices are favourable. Stored energy can then be used on site or deployed in energy markets, depending on operational requirements and market conditions.
Excess solar energy that is not immediately consumed can also be stored for later use, increasing the value of on-site renewable generation.
In the event of a grid failure, the system automatically transitions to battery power. Energy storage and backup power are therefore combined within a single integrated solution.

From energy trading and peak management to backup power and microgrids, Zwart develops and delivers BESS and microgrid solutions designed around real-world operational requirements.
What the BESS enables
The battery system combines energy storage, local generation and backup power in one integrated solution. This allows BE Fresh to use energy at the most beneficial moment, maximise the value of on-site solar generation and continue operating independently during a power outage.
Store
Store energy when it is available or attractively priced. The battery makes it possible to use energy later, rather than being dependent on the moment it is generated or purchased.
Trade
Respond to price fluctuations in the energy market. The BESS can charge when electricity prices are low and use or export that energy when market conditions are more favourable.
Maximise Solar PV
BE Fresh can capture more value from its 489 kWp solar installation. Electricity generated during the day can be stored in the battery and used later when demand arises.
Backup Power
In the event of a grid outage, the BESS can take over the energy supply. The system transitions smoothly into island mode, allowing critical operations to continue even when the utility grid is unavailable.
